Southern Premier League Winner 2019

In 2019 the Zimbabwean Cricket authorities asked if Anesu could spend a month with us to help acclimatise for an ICC tournament in Scotland. As always we were happy to help if we could and she arrived at the beginning of July.

It was immediately apparent that she was a talented and ‘different’ type of spin bowler, as she bowls primarily leg breaks from the front of the hand, generally known nowadays as doosras. She was due to play a couple of games with us and we thought her bowling might be useful as we started the 50 over element of our Southern League campaign.

Then came the shattering news that Zimbabwe had been banned by the ICC for some fraudulent affairs behind the scenes. But every cloud…….  It was arranged that Anesu would stay at HP for the remainder of the summer, and once she adjusted her lengths to English conditions she proved a more than valuable asset, her accurate and clever bowling proving an ideal foil for the rest of the attack. Her spell of 4-11 from 10 overs against Ansty was a match-changer, and she also proved her prowess with the bat, sharing a seventh wicket partnership of 142 with Sophie Mitchelmore when we were in some trouble against Ickenham.

Such was the impact that she made in a half a season that Anesu was voted HP bowler of the Year to go along side her Southern Premier League winners medal that she had played such a key role in. At that time she was ranked 18thin the world list of spinners in ODI cricket, one above Sophie Ecclestone!

Anesu then left to play a season for Glenelg in South Australia, and we were delighted that she decided to return to us for the 2020 summer. Covid changed the plans of course, and, unable to return home, she has been in Australia ever since. Depending on global restrictions being lifted and the appropriate visa being obtained, we are looking forward to Anesu making an impact again for HP in 2021.
