Bhavi Devchand, one of our overseas players in the 2016 season, also played for Gloucestershire and while there suggested that opener batter Abby Evans give Hursley a go in the following season. It seemed an unlikely long-term plan as Abby lived near Bristol, but she was keen to give it a try and after arranging to come down to meet her new teammates at Bath for the last game of the season was rushed into a debut.

It was the following summer that Abby really made her mark. We only played seven Premier League games, in which she scored 320 runs, including 107 at Bishop’s Stortford and 99 at St.Lawrence, and also took 17 wickets with her off-spin as we finished 2nd. Unsurprisingly, she was our Player of the Year.

Due to county commitments with Gloucestershire Abby was only available for the 50 over element the following summer, and her figures were more modest, but in 2019 she decided to give up county cricket so that she could concentrate solely on Hursley, and she was soon back to her form of two years previously, amassing 776 runs with a century and five fifties, as she was the leading run scorer in our Southern Premier League/Kia Summer Smash double. In 2020 she played in the HP Pirates side that pipped the HP Parrots for the Hampshire League title.

Abby has proved a fantastic acquisition. A heavy and quick run-scorer at the top of the innings, who usually makes the correct shot selection, she also bowls off-spin (although no longer as frequently as her first season), and is a very safe catcher.  Remarkably she has hardly missed a game since joining us. Some of our away games are more than a 300 mile round trip for Abby and even the home games are in excess of a hundred. Thanks for the heads up Bhavi, it has worked out very well!
